Life jackets are required for ages 11 and younger. Shoes (not flip flops, Crocs, sliders, etc.) are required. Bring Water, Snacks & Sunscreen. No Glass, No Alcohol. If you need water booties ($5 rental) or eyeglass holders ($10 to buy) we have them available Recommended Times To Go Tubing: Your experience will be more enjoyable if you can depart before noon. There are less crowds & less chance of afternoon thunder storms while on the river. Restrictions: Tubing may be closed due to a variety of reasons: Water level too low, water temp too high, amount of dissolved oxygen too low. These are all conditions detrimental to the aquatic life and we may be closed temporarily per our agreement with the City of Steamboat Springs and Colorado Department of Wildlife. Water level too high – Mountain Sports Kayak has determined that water levels above 700 cubic feet per second are not safe for commercial tubing. Age restrictions may be implicated dependent on flows. The Friends of the Yampa has dedicated time and resources to make sure you have the ability to easily determine what conditions are, on the Yampa River in Steamboat. OUR STORY Barry Smith started Mountain Sports Kayak School in 1982 as a young lad fulfilling a dream of sharing his passion for kayaking and love for rivers. After working as a raft guide in the Grand Canyon and ski guiding in Flagstaff, AZ, he caught eye of a quaint mountain town in Colorado that had a river running through it and a ski mountain in the backdrop... Steamboat Springs. In the summer of 1980 he moved to Steamboat, 2 years later, he started Mountain Sports Kayak School. His joy was teaching locals how to have fun for kayaking on the Yampa River. He has taught hundreds of locals how to kayak and will forever be a legend of the Yampa River. Barry's eldest son, Marty, started kayaking when he was just 4 years old. Barry was enthusiastic about having a "partner in crime" on the river, so eagerly got him out in a boat at a young age. Marty continued to paddle through his childhood years, joining the mostly adults at Charlies Hole, after school to "surf", or on a lap down the local class IV Fish Creek. Although he was busy with many other activities and sports, he would always find a way to go kayaking. As an adult, Marty started working and teaching at the kayak school under Barrys lead. He has travelled to many places to adventure in his kayak, Norway, Mexico, New Zealand, and the Pacific Northwest. The river has taken him many places, taught him many life lessons and led him to some of his best friends and memories. Eventually, Marty found his way back home to Colorado and he currently continues to share his enthusiasm and passion for the river with local kids, adults and tourists as Barry has handed over the paddle to him to continue on with the Mountain Sports Kayak tradition. Summer Kids Camp We will spend most of our time on the Upper Yampa in the more mellow river sections learning basic river safety, paddling skills, ecology of the river & how to be a good river advocate, in kayaks and on paddle boards. With more experienced kids, we will venture further downstream in smaller groups to encourage and have fun practicing their newly learned skills. Join our camp to meet new friends and experience the fun that can be had on the water! Mon - Fri • 3 hrs each day • Ages 7 - 15 • Kayak & paddle board summer camps• No experience needed Dates: June 8-12 June 15-19 June 22-26 June 29- 3 July 6-10 * Camps need at least 4 kids/week to run.
